For a US buyer choosing between Mexico and Taiwan for aftermarket auto parts, the trade is straightforward to state and harder to price: Mexico wins on transit time and, for goods that genuinely qualify under USMCA rules of origin, on duty; Taiwan wins on aftermarket-specific tooling depth, catalog coverage across model years, certification familiarity and order-size flexibility. The decision is usually not which country, but which parts belong where. How much lead time does nearshoring really save?
The headline saving is real. Trans-Pacific ocean freight is measured in weeks on the water before a container even reaches a US port, and port congestion, customs release and drayage to your warehouse sit on top of that. A truckload crossing the US–Mexico border is measured in days. For a program where inventory turns fast and stockouts cost sales, that difference compounds through the whole planning cycle: smaller safety stock, less capital tied up, and faster reaction to demand you didn't forecast.
Two honest qualifications. First, border crossing is not frictionless — customs processing, carrier availability and periodic congestion at major crossings all add variability, and variability is what actually hurts a replenishment plan. Second, many Mexican plants source their own inputs, sub-components and raw material from Asia, so the upstream lead time doesn't vanish; it moves upstream where you can see it less. Ask a prospective Mexican supplier where its material and sub-components come from before assuming your chain got shorter.
The duty picture as of August 2026
Goods that originate in Mexico under USMCA and are properly documented with a certification of origin generally enter the US duty-free. The critical word is originate: qualification depends on rules of origin specific to the product's classification, and assembling imported components in Mexico does not automatically confer origin. Buyers who assume USMCA treatment and discover at entry that their part does not qualify get the worst of both worlds — nearshore cost structure and full duty.
On the Taiwan side, the IEEPA "reciprocal" tariffs no longer exist — the Supreme Court held in Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump that IEEPA did not authorize them, and Executive Order 14389 of February 20, 2026 ended them; the 10% Section 122 surcharge that briefly replaced them lapsed on July 24, 2026. What governs now is a Section 232 cap: under a January 2026 US–Taiwan memorandum of understanding, implemented at 91 FR 31818 and retroactive to May 1, 2026, Taiwan-origin passenger-vehicle and light-truck parts on the Section 232 list are capped at 15% all-in. Parts not on that list instead pick up the Section 301 forced-labor duty that began July 24, 2026, set for Taiwan at 10% net of MFN — so 10% all-in.

What Mexico's supplier base is actually built for
Mexico's automotive manufacturing base is large and genuinely capable, but its center of gravity is OEM and tier-one supply to the North American vehicle assembly plants — harnesses, seating and interiors, stampings, injection molding and machining feeding production lines on schedule. That is a different business from the aftermarket, which requires catalog breadth across many model years including vehicles no longer in production, small mixed orders, fitment coverage per trim and option variant, and packaging designed for retail and distribution rather than line-side delivery.
So the honest answer for aftermarket collision and lighting parts specifically is that Mexico's bench is thinner than its industrial scale suggests, and finding a supplier already tooled for the specific fitments you sell takes real searching. Where Mexico does well for aftermarket buyers is labor-intensive work, parts made to your own drawing rather than to an OE fitment, and programs where the volume justifies dedicated tooling close to the market.
Does faster inventory turn beat cheaper landed cost?
This is the calculation most buyers skip, and it can flip the ranking. A cheaper landed cost from Asia is paid for with inventory: more units sitting in a warehouse to cover a longer replenishment cycle, capital tied up in them, warehouse space to hold them, and exposure if a fitment stops selling. A nearshore source with a higher unit cost may still win on total cost for a fast-moving SKU where you can order smaller and more often.
The inverse is just as true, and it is why aftermarket catalogs stay Asia-heavy. For a long tail of slow-moving fitments — parts you sell a handful of per month across hundreds of part numbers — the inventory-turn advantage is small, the tooling investment can never be justified locally, and the origin with existing tooling and a low incremental price wins easily. The overhead of running two origins is real, and it is worth carrying only when each origin is doing what it is actually best at.
