From First Contact to First Container: A Realistic Taiwan Sourcing Timeline
A realistic timeline from first contact with a Taiwan factory to your first container arriving at a US port runs roughly two to four months for a part that needs no new tooling, and three to six months or more for one that does — split across shortlisting candidate factories, sending and negotiating an RFQ, sampling, a pilot production run, and ocean freight. These figures are illustrative, not a guarantee for any specific part, and the biggest swing factor by far is whether your part needs dedicated tooling built from scratch. Here's the phase-by-phase breakdown, where time actually gets lost, and what can safely run in parallel.
How long does it really take to source from Taiwan?
The honest answer is "it depends on tooling" more than almost anything else. A part that can be made on a factory's existing equipment — a machined component, or a part cut from a die or mold that already exists — can realistically move from first contact to a shipped pilot order in eight to twelve weeks. A part needing new production tooling adds real time up front for tool design, cutting and try-out before a single unit exists, which routinely pushes the same journey to sixteen to twenty-four weeks or more before a pilot ships, on top of whichever ocean transit time applies to your destination port.
Phase by phase: shortlist to shipped container

Where weeks actually get lost
A handful of predictable friction points account for most of the delay beyond the phases themselves. Slow buyer-side response is another: a factory waiting a week for your reply to a clarifying question loses that week just as surely as a factory taking a week to reply to you. Skipped or rushed verification is a third — discovering a certification gap or a registration mismatch after tooling has started is far more expensive in time than checking it upfront, as covered in our supplier-verification guide. And unclear acceptance criteria at the sample or pilot stage can trigger a round or two of back-and-forth that a clear, written standard would have avoided entirely.
What you can safely parallelize
Not every phase has to run in strict sequence. While a factory is quoting, you can be running your own verification checks — company registration, certification confirmation — on your shortlist candidates rather than waiting until after a quote arrives. While a sample is in transit, you can be lining up a freight forwarder and confirming Incoterms and consolidation plans for the eventual production shipment, rather than starting that conversation only once the pilot ships. And if you're evaluating more than one candidate factory, running RFQs to several in parallel — disclosed to each of them, which is normal practice — compresses the shortlist-to-decision phase meaningfully compared with evaluating candidates one at a time.
What a sourcing service compresses — and what it doesn't
A sourcing service's honest value is mainly in the front half of this timeline: identifying and pre-verifying candidate factories, which otherwise consumes the first few weeks of a new buyer's own research and cold outreach. Once a factory has shipped one clean production order, a repeat order on the same specification typically skips the shortlist, RFQ, and sampling phases entirely, and can move from purchase order to shipped container in whatever the factory's standard production lead time is for that part — often four to eight weeks plus ocean freight. That gap is the real payoff of the upfront time investment on a first order: everything after it gets dramatically shorter.
