Falcon, Fairlane, Galaxie: Sourcing Ford Classics That Aren't Mustangs
For a Falcon, Fairlane or Galaxie business the single most useful sourcing fact is that the Mustang was assembled out of the Falcon and Fairlane parts bin — so for every family that was genuinely shared, the deepest reproduction catalog in the classic world is already working for you and you should never commission any of it. The orphaning begins the moment you cross into what makes each car itself: exterior brightwork, emblems and scripts, model-year-specific lamp and grille hardware, interior soft trim, and seals cut to a shell nobody else used. But the boundary is not where most buyers draw it. We went looking for evidence that full-size Ford sheet metal is a dead category and found the opposite, and the established Ford houses carry the Falcon and the Fairlane as whole catalogue lines rather than as afterthoughts. The rule that follows is: check what exists before you discuss a commission, then commission only what genuinely does not.
Why does the Mustang catalog matter so much to a Falcon or Fairlane buyer?
Because the cars share hardware by design. To hold development cost down, the Mustang used chassis, suspension and drivetrain components derived from the Ford Falcon and Fairlane, and it used a unitised platform-type frame from the 1964 Falcon with welded box-section side rails and crossmembers. The body was completely different — shorter wheelbase, lower seating position, lower overall height — but underneath it, a great deal of the car was already in production.
That single design decision is worth money to you decades later. Every dollar of tooling that first-generation Mustang volume justified in the shared mechanical families is tooling you can buy from without paying for it. It also draws the boundary precisely: the families the Mustang did not share are the families where your platform is on its own, and where the only parts that exist are the ones somebody paid to tool for a much smaller audience.
Which part families can you borrow, and which must you commission?
The table below is the working rule. Read the third column before the fourth — the most expensive mistake in this segment is commissioning a tool for a part that is already sitting on a distributor's shelf.

Is full-size Ford sheet metal really an unserved category?
No, and this is the assumption most worth correcting. We researched this section expecting to confirm that full-size Ford body panels are a gap, and the evidence went the other way. Auto Metal Direct catalogues OE-style quarter panels for the 1963 and the 1964 Galaxie fastback, in both hands. Classic Sheet Metal — a manufacturer that describes thirty years of producing panels for 1955-71 Thunderbirds before widening its line — now runs separate Galaxie categories for 1961-62, 1963, 1964 and 1966, within a range that covers quarter panels, floor pans, trunk panels, wheelhouse, rocker, door and fender repair sections.
For a buyer, that means the correct first move on any full-size body panel is a catalog search, not a sourcing enquiry. Heavy stampings need large presses and large dies that stay where they already are; a new offshore tool for a panel somebody already tooled domestically is a losing trade before freight is even counted — and freight on a quarter panel is not trivial.
What is genuinely orphaned, and what will never be tooled anywhere?
There is a real orphan zone, and it is narrower and more specific than the folklore suggests. It is model-year-specific: a grille moulding used for one season, a taillamp bezel that changed with a facelift, an interior escutcheon fitted only to one trim level. Those are the parts where nobody's catalog has an entry and where a commissioned run is the only thing that will ever exist.
Then there is a category that will not be tooled by anyone, at any MOQ, in any country: four-door, wagon and low-trim-specific body and brightwork parts. The surviving population that would buy them is not large enough to recover a die, and no amount of cheap tooling changes an arithmetic problem that begins with the number of cars. The honest answer there is used, NOS or one-off fabrication, and a shop that says so keeps a customer longer than one that sells hope and delivers a sample eight months later.
Two more limits belong in the same paragraph. Long one-piece full-size stainless mouldings are a freight-damage problem — they distort in transit, they are difficult to straighten without marking, and the scrap rate can eat the unit saving that justified importing them. And anything carrying Ford script, a model badge or the blue oval is a trademark question before it is a manufacturing one.
How do Ford's original tooling and trademarks affect what you can have made?
Two things sit between you and a Ford-marked reproduction, and only one of them is a factory problem. The first is tooling. Dennis Carpenter's account, as carried by National Parts Depot, is that in 1998 Ford granted it use of the original Ford factory tooling for many of the parts it now makes, run alongside its own plant — plastic injection moulding, rubber extrusion and moulding, metal stamping presses, zinc die casting and roller mills — with 100% of its Ford tooling parts made in the USA. A part struck on original factory tooling carries an accuracy pedigree a reverse-engineered copy cannot claim. Where one exists, buy it rather than compete with it.
The second is the mark itself. Ford script, a model badge and the blue oval are Ford's trademarks, and reproducing them is a licensing question rather than a manufacturing one. A Taiwan factory will cut the die either way; the exposure is entirely yours, and it is far cheaper to resolve before the tool exists than after. If a licence is not available to you, the honest options are to leave the mark off and sell the part unmarked, or not to make it.
When should you just buy from an established distributor?
More often than a sourcing service is supposed to admit. National Parts Depot lists the 60-70 Falcon and the 64-71 Fairlane as their own catalogue lines among roughly twenty-five vehicle lines. Auto Krafters distributes classic Ford and Mercury parts across Galaxies, Fairlanes, Torinos, Falcons, Thunderbirds, Mustangs, Comets and the F-series, on what it calls 46-plus years of Ford experience. Dennis Carpenter manufactures across a wide Ford span, part of it on original factory tooling. If the part is on one of those shelves, buying it removes the sampling cycle, the tooling cost, the freight risk and the inventory — and no small-run commission beats a shelf price on a part somebody already tooled.

Borrow everything the Mustang catalog covers, check the existing tool before assuming a gap — particularly on full-size sheet metal, where more exists than the folklore admits — and accept that four-door, wagon and low-trim brightwork belongs to the used and NOS trade permanently.
