Where the Mopar Catalog Ends: Sourcing B-Body and E-Body Reproduction Parts

For a classic Mopar buyer the decision that matters is not Taiwan versus the United States — it is whether the part sits inside or outside the officially licensed reproduction catalog. Chrysler's platforms are supported in tiers: the 1970-74 E-body has the deepest catalog of any of them, 1968-70 B-body is well covered, the earlier and later B-body years thin out quickly, and the full-size C-body is largely absent from the major catalogs altogether. Inside that line, buy off the shelf — you are competing against tooling somebody amortised a decade ago, and you will lose. Outside it, commissioning a run is not the cheap route, it is the only route that exists, and Taiwan's small-run pattern-making, extrusion, plating and lamp tooling is a realistic way to a first few hundred pieces. Here is where the line falls, and where this community's suspicion of imported reproduction is entirely earned.

Why is the real Mopar question "inside or outside the catalog" rather than "Taiwan or the US"?

Because Chrysler licenses this trade, and most of what a buyer finds online for a popular Mopar is somebody's approved tool. On 1 November 2016 Mopar announced a restoration-parts web portal citing more than 45 approved Mopar restoration parts licensees and more than 9,000 restoration parts and accessories, searchable by licensee name or by category: exterior trim, interior trim, sheet metal, underhood and underbody, and manuals. Those are 2016 figures and we found no more recent count published by Stellantis, so treat the structure as durable and the numbers as a dated snapshot.

The commercial consequence is simple. A licensee who tooled an E-body trim piece years ago recovers that die across every unit it has produced since; your 300-piece commission recovers a new die across 300 units. No amount of factory-gate arithmetic wins that comparison.

Where the line falls shows up in how the big houses organise their own reference material. Classic Industries' guide to identifying classic Dodge and Plymouth vehicles maps A-body (1960-76: Valiant, Barracuda, Dart, Demon, Dart Sport, Duster), B-body (1962-74: Polara, Coronet, Super Bee, Charger, Fury, Satellite, Belvedere, Road Runner) and E-body (1970-74: Challenger, Barracuda and 'Cuda) — and does not cover the full-size C-body cars at all. That absence is the map. One caution before you use platform letters as sourcing shorthand: nameplates moved between them. Which Chrysler platforms are actually well served, and which are not?

Depth tracks how many cars survived and are still being restored, not how desirable the car is now. The tiers below come from published catalog coverage and from what owners in each community report having to do — a starting map for a specific part, not a guarantee.

Is the C-body really that bad, or is that just forum talk?

It is real, and the reason is demand rather than difficulty. On the C-body forum an owner puts it flatly: every time he finds a place with catalogs, they completely skip over the C-body. A longer-serving member gives the reason in two words — insufficient demand — and another frames the scarcity as the thing that makes the group exclusive. Their working answer is specialist vendors, salvage yards, eBay for used and new old stock, and owner-to-owner sales, with the standing advice to look every day because good parts sell the moment they are listed.

For a business that changes the question. A C-body gap is not an opportunity waiting for a factory; it is a category where the population that would absorb a few hundred pieces may not exist. Without recurring demand in your own sales history, trade in used and NOS rather than tool anything.

What does the "chinesium" objection get right?

This audience arrives pre-loaded against Asian-made reproduction, and pretending otherwise wastes everyone's time. The objection deserves to be taken seriously because it is concentrated rather than general: it clusters around functional assemblies with moving or heat-cycled elements, not around cosmetic parts.

The canonical example on the B-body boards is a reproduction exhaust manifold heat riser fitted to a 1969 Charger: the flap moved freely on installation and was close to immovable two days later. The replies split three ways — free it with penetrating lubricant, weld the shaft open, or delete the assembly — one long-time member sums the mood up as the hobby getting more challenging every day, and one reply just calls the part chinesium. That is a warranty and field-failure problem, not a finish complaint, and it is exactly what we would tell you not to commission offshore. A heat-cycled mechanism with a moving flap needs material specification, heat treatment and a validated wear interface, none of which is what a small-run classic reproduction bench is set up to deliver.

The corollary is that the suspicion is misapplied when it lands on a plated trim piece, an extruded seal profile or a die-cast emblem. Those are process problems with visible failure modes you can inspect on a sample.

Which part families are worth commissioning when nobody tools them?

The list is short, and it maps onto trades Taiwan already runs at volume for the current-model collision and lighting aftermarket, pointed at an old part instead.

  • Extruded and roll-formed brightwork — the die is cheap next to a stamping tool, and correctness lives in cross-section, polish grain direction and the plating stack
  • Die-cast emblems, scripts and bezels — detail sharpness, enamel colour and pin spacing decide it; if the piece carries a Chrysler or model mark, the trademark licence is yours to hold, not the factory's
  • Lamp lenses, housings and bezels for a year nobody reproduced — the costliest tooling on this list, so it needs several hundred units behind it
  • Small pressed brackets, escutcheons and hardware, where gauge, flange geometry and hole positions are the whole specification
  • Rubber and seal profiles cut against a genuine original and specified by cross-section, durometer and compound rather than by outline

What should you never commission for a judged Mopar?

Anything whose correctness is a casting number or a date code. Certified and concours-class judging works by verifying production history — casting marks and date codes read against the car's build date — and production history is the one thing a copy can never supply. We put that qualitatively rather than quoting a rulebook, because standards differ by club and event and we could not verify a current published Mopar standard we were willing to attach percentages to.

The instruction is the same either way: for a car headed to that bar, buy an original and restore it, and leave date-coded and casting-marked under-hood and drivetrain hardware to the used and NOS trade. A part that reproduces a casting mark is not a better part; depending on how it is sold, it is a misrepresentation risk.

When should you simply buy from the licensed catalog instead?

Whenever the part is already in it. This costs us the enquiry and we will say it anyway: for high-volume E-body trim and sheet metal, and for the well-covered 1968-70 B-body years, an approved licensee's shelf price sits below what a fresh tool amortised over one order can reach — and buying it removes the sampling cycle, the freight risk and the inventory.

Commissioning earns its place in a narrower band: a part nobody tools, a part where the incumbent's quality is demonstrably poor, a part you sell in the hundreds year after year, or a group of parts you can tool together to share setup. Find the line first. If the part is inside the licensed catalog, buy it and move on.
