GM, Ford and Mopar Restoration Licensing: What a Licence Actually Buys You Before You Commission a Run
An OEM restoration licence is a trademark licence granted to a brand owner, and that is the whole of it. It is not a manufacturing approval, it is not a fitment certificate, and it is not something a factory in Taiwan — or in Ohio — can hold for you or transfer with the tooling. What it buys is the right to put one specific mark on one specific approved product and its packaging, which in turn buys shelf space in the catalogues that merchandise that mark. That makes it a channel decision more than a quality decision, and it has to be made before you cut tooling, because the licence determines what the part is allowed to look like. A trim strip with no script is an ordinary sourcing project. The identical strip with the division's script cast into it is a licensing project with a lead time measured in months.
What does an OEM restoration licence actually license?
The clearest descriptions of these programmes come from licensees, because licensees are the ones obliged to publish disclaimers. OER states that its site is "owned and operated by OER - Original Equipment Reproduction, an authorized GM Restoration Parts™ and Mopar Authentic Restoration Product™ licensee," and then says of the trademark holders: "These trademark holders are not affiliated with OER® Corporation, our products, or our website. Nor do they endorse our products, catalog, website, or company in any manner." Classic Industries publishes near-identical language, adding that its Mopar-marked items carry a "logo [that] indicates that the product is licensed by FCA US LLC."
Note what that is not. It is not an endorsement, and it is not company-wide. Both licensees say the licence attaches product by product: "Only products bearing the GM restoration emblem have been accepted into the program," and "Only products identified with this logo are an officially licensed MOPAR Authentic Restoration Product™." A licensee's catalogue is not a licensed catalogue. If you are buying to resell, read the emblem SKU by SKU, not the masthead.
Getting in is not a web form. SEMA's Automotive Restoration Market Organization — the restoration council that maintains a members-only Trademark Licensing Overview covering Ford, GM and Chrysler — puts it flatly: "OEM car makers are very proud and protective of their trademarks. There are many steps involved in order to display an 'Officially Licensed' logo on your product," and obtaining a licence "is one of the few remaining processes that cannot be accomplished 'online' or with a simple application."
How do the three programmes compare on paper?
Below is what each programme publishes about itself and, just as usefully, what none of them publishes. None of it substitutes for asking the licensing department directly.

Can a Taiwanese factory hold, supply or transfer a licence to you?
No — and neither can we, so let us be blunt about it. These programmes license a brand owner: a company that sells into the US market under its own name and puts the OEM's mark on the box under contract. A contract manufacturer is not the licensed party in that structure, and a licence does not travel with a tool. If a factory or an agent offers you "licensed parts," what is being described is contract manufacturing for somebody else's licensee. The licence sits with that brand, and it does not come to you when you buy a run.
This is why the mark on the box and the address on the carton answer different questions. Ford's own programme material ties licensing to a quality-assurance survey, to Ford quality standards and to federal and state safety regulations — none of which is a country-of-origin rule. You can be a licensee whose parts are made in Asia, and you can be an unlicensed brand whose parts are stamped in Ohio. Buyers routinely read one as a proxy for the other.
Why must the licensing decision come before the tooling decision?
Because it changes the drawing, and the drawing is what you are paying to freeze into steel. A quarter-panel trim strip with no script is a metal-forming and plating exercise. The same strip with a division script cast into the face is a trademark-bearing part, so the sequence is licence first, tool second. Reverse it and you own a tool that produces something you cannot lawfully import, and deleting the script means new tooling rather than a revision.

Is a licence a quality signal or a channel decision?
Mostly channel, and the marketing gap tells you so. One GM licensee's page says "The GM Restoration Icon represents that a product has been officially licensed by General Motors, assuring factory correct fit, finish and authenticity." Set that beside another licensee's disclaimer that the trademark holders do not endorse its products "in any manner" and you have the honest range: acceptance into a programme at the top, no endorsement at the bottom. Both statements come from companies holding the licence.
Against our own commercial interest: a licence does not remove your first-article inspection obligation. Ford's material describes a sample-approval step and returned master samples, which is real, but long-running threads on Vintage Mustang Forums describe reproduction sheet metal fit as varying by which tooling and which supplier a seller chose, not by what is printed on the carton. Treat that as community sentiment, not data — we found no published fitment audit of licensed restoration parts. Inspect the first article yourself either way.
So the real question is narrower than "is licensed better." It is whether the distributors and marque catalogues you want to sell through merchandise the emblem, and whether your buyers will pay the royalty-inclusive price for it. For some channels, obviously yes. For a direct-to-shop brand selling on correctness and lead time, often no.
What are your four options for a SKU that needs a mark?
There are only four, and three of them are cheaper than the one everybody starts with.
- License it. Budget months, and expect terms you cannot see in advance — royalty rates, minimum guarantees and term length are not published by any of the three programmes.
- Redesign the mark out. If the script is decorative rather than load-bearing to the sale, a clean unmarked version is a straightforward sourcing project with your own brand on the box.
- Buy the licensee's part and resell it — frequently correct for a SKU you would sell in the low hundreds a year.
- Drop the SKU. A catalogue hole is cheaper than tooling you cannot ship.
Where we stop, and what we will actually do

If a SKU only makes sense with an OEM emblem, script or bowtie cast into it and you are not going to license it, the right answer is an existing licensee's line or re-plating originals — not an offshore run, and we will not quote it. That is a refusal, not a negotiating position. What is left is large and underserved: unmarked structure, brackets, script-free trim, hardware, seals and the long tail of small stamped and machined parts nobody reproduces outside the top few platforms.
