Mercedes and Porsche Still Sell Classic Parts. So What Is Actually Left to Reproduce?
Much less than you would expect — and you can find out exactly how much in about ten minutes, before anyone spends a cent on tooling. Mercedes-Benz's own classic parts search advertises "over 160,000 genuine parts" for classic Mercedes-Benz vehicles, supplied through "close cooperation with original suppliers and over 150 certified partners." Porsche puts "over 60,000 spare parts available in Porsche Classic's current range." Jaguar Land Rover Classic, the useful British comparison, offers "tens of thousands of parts" that it says are "manufactured to precise specifications using original drawings and tooling, often by the original suppliers." On these cars the manufacturer outlived the model, which means the reproduction opportunity is not a category at all — it is a narrow band of individually orphaned parts. Tooling anything outside that band is spending money to lose an argument in public.
How much do these factories still actually sell?
Enough that the burden of proof sits on the reproduction, not on the genuine part. The Mercedes-Benz classic parts search does not merely warehouse old stock — it lists newly manufactured components, including a run of 140 newly manufactured parts for classic and young classic vehicles announced around the company's 140th anniversary, and it describes reproducing genuine parts through the original suppliers and its certified partner network. Porsche distributes its Classic range through partners worldwide and applies the same testing regime it applies to current parts.
Porsche has also published, unusually candidly, why the low-volume end of this is hard. Announcing its use of 3D printing for classic spares in December 2018, Porsche said that "producing small batches using new tools would be largely inefficient" — at that time eight components were in 3D production with roughly twenty more in testing. Read that as a buyer and it tells you two things: the factory knows exactly which parts do not justify tooling, and it is finding ways to make them anyway. That is the competition you would be tooling against.
So which parts on these cars are genuinely orphaned?
A part is genuinely orphaned when three things are true at once: the manufacturer no longer lists it new, the original supplier has stopped making it too, and good used stock has thinned to the point that owners are buying whatever is available rather than what is correct. Any two out of three is not enough. If the factory has stopped but the original supplier still sells the same part under its own brand, that part is not orphaned — it has just moved counters. If used stock is healthy, a reproduction is competing with a genuine part at scrap-yard prices.
The trade's standing example of a properly orphaned part is the headlight door on the W123 and early W126 — a chassis-specific cosmetic assembly that forum consensus holds neither the manufacturer nor its original lighting supplier still produces, leaving essentially one low-cost aftermarket option whose reputation owners argue about at length. That is forum opinion rather than a supply-chain audit, and it should be treated as an illustration of a pattern rather than as a verified fact about any particular part number. But the pattern is exactly the one worth hunting: a visible part, no genuine source, one new option, and a customer base that dislikes the only thing they can buy.
Is this classic Mercedes or Porsche part worth reproducing?
Run the situation down this table before you run it past a factory. Most parts on these cars fall in the first two rows, which is the point.

What are you actually competing against — and what are you not?
Name the target precisely, because getting this wrong is what makes reproduction projects on German classics fail commercially even when the part is fine. A commissioned reproduction is not trying to beat the genuine part. It cannot: the genuine part wins on originality, on documentation, and on the owner's resale narrative, and it wins even when it is objectively no better made.
What a commissioned reproduction is trying to beat is the cheap aftermarket part that is currently the only new option in that orphaned band — a part the owner community already buys grudgingly and complains about specifically. That is a beatable target, and it is beatable on exactly the axes a specified, first-article-inspected part is good at: correct grain, correct plating, correct fit at the fastener points, consistent between lots. Say that out loud in your own marketing, too. A buyer who can price a genuine part in thirty seconds will trust the vendor who told them the truth about the comparison over the one who implied a false one.
What can a reproduction never claim on these cars?
Membership. Mercedes-Benz's reproduction supply runs through its original suppliers and a certified partner network — a closed system that a contract manufacturer in Taiwan, or anywhere else outside it, cannot join. Anything you commission is openly aftermarket, permanently, and has to be sold that way. No "OEM-equivalent" language, no implied factory lineage, no photographs staged to suggest one. This audience checks, and the correction is worse than the sale was worth.
The safety exclusions are not marketing caution either. Braking hydraulics and the mechanical fuel injection on the earlier chassis are bad reproduction targets from any origin: they are systems where the failure mode is severe, the tolerances are not verifiable on receipt, and there is an established specialist rebuild trade doing the work properly on genuine cores. Leave them to it.
How do you check before you spend anything on tooling?
This sequence costs an afternoon and disqualifies most candidate parts, which is the outcome you want.
- Search the manufacturer's own classic parts catalogue by chassis and part type first. If it is listed new, stop — you have your answer
- Check whether the original supplier still sells the part under its own brand. Discontinued by the manufacturer is not the same as out of production
- Sample the used market across a few months rather than a single afternoon, and note whether listings are genuinely scarce or merely seasonal
- Read what owners say about the existing new option, and identify the specific complaint — fit, finish, material, or lifespan. That complaint is your product specification
- Only then price tooling, and price it against the volume you can actually move in three years, not against total surviving cars
Where this leaves a German-classic buyer
The rule that governs this whole segment is short: if the OEM classic parts search lists the part new, do not reproduce it. What is left after that rule is applied is small, specific, and genuinely worth having — orphaned cosmetic assemblies and trim where the only new option is one the owner community tolerates rather than likes. This is the mirror image of the orphan British marques, where no factory exists to check with at all; on a W113 or an early 911, the factory is the first call, not the last.
