- Get the fitment confirmation in writing, tied to the specific chassis code and year range, so there's a clear record if a dispute comes up later
Common fitment traps

- Facelift or mid-cycle refreshes that look identical in photos but quietly move a mounting point or connector
- Regional variants — a US-market and EU-market version of the same nameplate that differ in sensor brackets or wiring that isn't visible from outside
- VIN-range-dependent parts, where fitment depends on the vehicle's build sequence rather than the calendar year on the title
- "Universal fit" aftermarket claims that technically work but require trimming or drilling — acceptable for some buyers, a dealbreaker for others
Where a VIN decode fits into the process
A vehicle's VIN encodes plant, engine, trim and often production date — which makes it a genuinely useful cross-check, not just a formality. When a buyer or their customer can supply a VIN, decoding it against the manufacturer's build data narrows the fitment question from "this model, roughly these years" down to a specific configuration, which is exactly the level of precision that catches mid-cycle running changes before they turn into a return.
