Glass for a Classic Restoration: What DOT Marking Decides About Where You Buy
For a classic, the glass itself is almost never the right thing to commission overseas, and the reason is a marking rule rather than a quality opinion. FMVSS 205 at 49 CFR 571.205 says in S5.1.2 that "Glazing intended for aftermarket replacement is required to meet the requirements of this standard," and S6.2 says a prime glazing manufacturer certifies its glazing by adding the symbol "DOT" plus "a manufacturer's code mark that NHTSA assigns to the manufacturer." S4 defines a prime glazing manufacturer as "a manufacturer that fabricates, laminates, or tempers glazing materials." That single chain sorts the whole market: a factory with no assigned code mark cannot lawfully certify replacement glazing for a US on-road vehicle, and no amount of sample quality changes it. The useful half of this article is everything else in the opening — the channels, frames, rollers and clips that are not glazing, are not regulated, and are chronically unavailable for anything outside the top few platforms.
Does a classic car get an exemption from the federal glazing rule?
No — and it is worth being blunt, because the opposite is widely assumed. Read S3 of the standard: it applies to "passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks designed to carry at least one person, buses, motorcycles, slide-in campers, pickup covers designed to carry persons while in motion and low speed vehicles, and to glazing materials for use in those vehicles." There is no carve-out by model year, no antique or collector class, and nothing that switches the rule off below some volume. S5.1.2 then reaches the aftermarket directly rather than only the vehicle assembly line.
What the standard does not do is turn a restoration shop into a manufacturer. The obligation to certify sits on whoever fabricates, laminates or tempers the material. A distributor that buys certified glazing and resells it is not a prime glazing manufacturer. But S6.3 does reach the shop that cuts: "A manufacturer or distributor who cuts a section of glazing material to which this standard applies, for use in a motor vehicle or camper," must mark that material per section 7 of ANSI/SAE Z26.1-1996 and certify compliance. If your pre-war project gets flat glass cut locally, that cutter has an obligation of its own, and it is worth knowing that before the invoice arrives.
What does the DOT mark on a piece of glass actually certify?
Two separate things, and buyers routinely collapse them. The "DOT" symbol plus the assigned code identifies who is standing behind the certification. The "AS" designation next to it, required by section 7 of ANSI/SAE Z26.1-1996 — the version incorporated by reference into the rule — says what kind of glazing it is and therefore where in the vehicle it is permitted to sit. FMVSS 205 leans on those designations in its own text: S5.4 requires low speed vehicle windshields to meet the Z26.1 specifications "for either AS-1 or AS-4 glazing," and S5.5 permits Item 4A glazing in side windows rearward of the C pillar. Position is part of the certification, not a detail you choose after the fact.
Getting the code mark is an administrative act, not a test result you can buy. Under S6.2, NHTSA assigns the code "after the manufacturer submits a written request to the Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance," and the request "must include the company name, address, and a statement from the manufacturer certifying its status as a prime glazing manufacturer as defined in S4." One practical warning: the mailing address still printed in the rule text is NHTSA's former headquarters, so confirm the current submission address with the agency rather than copying it out of the CFR.
Which parts of a classic glass opening come from where?
Stop thinking about "the glass" and start thinking about the opening as an assembly. Only one line below is regulated glazing. The rest is stamping, rubber, felt and small mechanism — ordinary manufacturing.

Why is Taiwan the wrong door for classic glazing in particular?
We will say this before anyone pays us US$99, because it is the honest answer. Low-volume curved glass for old cars depends on two assets that cannot be bought quickly: bending fixtures and a pattern library built up over decades, and — for the US market — an NHTSA-assigned prime-glazing code. Both sit with the established classic glass specialists, not with Taiwan's automotive glass base, which is float-glass-linked and shaped around current-model volume.
It is also worth defusing an argument we could easily make in our own favour. Taiwan does dominate aftermarket collision certification: when we pulled CAPA's participating-manufacturer roster on 3 August 2026, 83 of the 91 listed companies were in Taiwan, against five in the United States and one each in China, Italy and Thailand, and a Taiwan automotive-glass maker was on that list. That proves nothing about your car. CAPA's own scope page describes standard 801 as covering "Windshields," with FMVSS 205 compliance initial and ongoing — a late-model collision-replacement bench. A factory that can certify a current-model windshield tells you nothing about whether anyone there can bend a 1957 backlight.
Is reproducing the original maker's bug a separate problem?
Yes, and it is the trap almost nobody writes about. Original automotive glass carries an etched maker's logo — the "bug" — usually with a date code beside it. Corvette Central's reference on the subject describes the now-defunct Libbey-Owens-Ford Company as the supplier of that flat glass on Corvettes through 1986, with a two-letter code in which "the first letter represents the month of manufacture and the second letter represents the year." Judges and buyers read those marks, which is exactly why there is demand to reproduce them.
A maker's logo is a trademark, though, and putting somebody else's mark on new goods is a different legal question from the DOT one — one that lands on the importer at the border rather than on the factory. That is the subject of our emblems article, and the analysis there applies word for word to a logo etched in glass. The short version: reproducing the shape of a windshield is a manufacturing problem, and reproducing the badge in its corner is a licensing problem.
What should you ask a glazing supplier before you talk price?
Three questions, in this order, and they take about a minute. First, what is your NHTSA-assigned manufacturer code mark, and are you the party that fabricates, laminates or tempers this glass? Second, what AS designation does each piece carry for the position it is going into? Third, if you are cutting flat glass locally, who is marking and certifying it under S6.3? A supplier that cannot answer the first question is not a prime glazing manufacturer, whatever the sample looks like in the light.
Where sourcing genuinely earns its keep in this category is the rest of the opening. Run channel, lining, division bars, setting tape, rollers, clips and garnish hardware are unregulated, cheap to freight, chronically unreproduced for oddball marques, and sit squarely on the stamping, rubber and small-mechanism bench Taiwan actually has.
