Taiwan vs. Vietnam, Thailand, and India for Aftermarket Auto Parts

If you're choosing an Asian sourcing base beyond China for aftermarket auto parts, the short honest answer is: Taiwan leads for fitment-critical, certification-heavy aftermarket parts — lamps, body panels, body hardware, gaskets; Thailand's strength is its OEM-tier ecosystem and rubber; India brings castings, forgings and enormous domestic-aftermarket scale at aggressive prices; and Vietnam offers the lowest labor cost but the thinnest dedicated aftermarket bench of the four. Thailand: the OEM ecosystem

Thailand is Southeast Asia's automotive assembly hub, built over decades around Japanese OEM production — which is why its supplier base skews toward OEM-tier mechanical components, and why its process discipline in that tier is genuinely strong. It is also a major natural-rubber producer, with the molded-rubber capability that follows. The catch for an aftermarket buyer: much of that capacity is oriented to OEM contracts rather than export aftermarket catalogs, so finding suppliers set up for aftermarket fitment coverage, small mixed orders and export documentation takes more digging than the size of the industry suggests.

India: castings, forgings and scale

India's genuine strengths map well to a specific slice of the aftermarket: iron castings — brake rotors and drums above all — forgings, filters, and a domestic aftermarket so large that export-grade suppliers have real catalog depth. Pricing is aggressive, and English-language business communication is a given. The honest caveats: consistency varies widely between the top tier of export-hardened suppliers and the broader market, so supplier selection carries more weight than in a more uniform cluster; and ocean lead times to North America are typically longer than from East Asia.

Vietnam: cost, but a thin aftermarket bench

Vietnam has the lowest labor costs of the four and a fast-growing manufacturing base, with real strength in motorcycle and scooter production and in labor-intensive work like wiring harnesses and sub-assemblies. For the four-wheel aftermarket specifically, though, the bench is thin: much of the capacity is foreign-invested plants serving OEM programs, and the deep aftermarket-specific tooling libraries — the thousands of vehicle-specific dies and molds that define the collision and lighting trade — largely don't exist there yet. Vietnam is a strong answer for the right part, but rarely for fitment-critical aftermarket sheet metal or lamps.

Taiwan: the aftermarket specialist

Taiwan's position is nearly the inverse of Vietnam's: the highest labor cost of the four, and the deepest aftermarket-specific capability. Decades of serving the US and EU collision-repair trade built vehicle-specific tooling libraries for body panels, lamps and body hardware that no other country outside China approaches, along with the certification infrastructure — CAPA and NSF familiarity, widespread IATF 16949 discipline — and the export habits (English drawings, small mixed orders, market-specific compliance) that fragmented aftermarket demand requires. Where Taiwan loses is where that specialization doesn't matter: commodity parts where price is the whole spec, and labor-heavy assemblies.

How to actually decide

Start from the part, not the country: ask which origin's typical strengths your part actually needs, then run a landed-cost comparison with real quotes and current duty rates for each origin — tariff treatment differs by origin and by product, it has moved repeatedly in the last two years, and the ranking you remember from an old comparison may simply no longer hold.
