Platform RFQs get ignored for a structural reason, not a personal one: a broadcast request lands in front of many suppliers at once, each of whom knows the others received it, and quoting costs real engineering time. Faced with a queue, a supplier's sales desk answers the requests that are specific, answerable and plausibly winnable first — and a one-line broadcast asking for "best price on brake parts" is none of those. The fix is rarely sending more RFQs. It is sending a complete, targeted one to a supplier who actually makes the part, addressed to a company you have identified by name.
How does a broadcast RFQ actually work?
On most B2B platforms, a buyer RFQ is distributed to suppliers matching the category, who then choose whether to spend a quotation on it. That distribution model is genuinely useful for the buyer — it is the cheapest way to reach many suppliers at once — but it changes the economics on the other side. Each supplier is quoting into a field of unknown size against an unknown buyer, so the expected value of any single reply is low.
The rational response is triage. Requests that are specific enough to quote accurately and that signal a real buyer get answered; the rest get a template or nothing. This is not suppliers being difficult — it is the same prioritisation any business applies to inbound leads, and understanding it is most of the solution.
What does a supplier's triage actually look for?
Ask a sales desk what makes them quote and the answers converge on a short list. Your RFQ is being scored, informally, on:
- Can we make this? An identifiable part on a vehicle platform they cover — make, model, year range, position — rather than a category noun
- Can we quote it accurately? Material, finish, quantity, packaging and Incoterm present, so the number they send is one they can stand behind
- Is this buyer real? A company domain, a named person, a stated target market and a plausible timeline
- Is this winnable? Evidence you are talking to a manageable number of suppliers rather than fifty, and that price is not the only criterion
- How much work is one reply? A structured request answerable in one pass beats one requiring three rounds of clarification
What gets answered, by channel?
Response quality tracks how targeted the request is far more than the channel itself. The table describes general patterns, not guarantees — a great RFQ on a platform will outperform a vague email every time.

What turns an ignored RFQ into an answered one?
Completeness is the single highest-return change. An RFQ that states vehicle make, model, year range and position, material and finish, annual and first-order quantity, target market and compliance regime, packaging expectation and the Incoterm you want quoted can be priced in one pass. One that says "need quote for headlights, best price" cannot be priced at all — the supplier would have to guess at six variables, and guessing is how they lose money. Targeting is the second. Sending a complete RFQ to five suppliers you have identified as actually making the category — via a Taiwan directory, a show catalog or your own research — outperforms broadcasting to fifty, both in reply rate and in the quality of what comes back. Suppliers can tell the difference, and so can your own follow-up capacity.
What if you still get no replies?
Work through the likely causes in order. Is the category one these suppliers actually make, or did the platform category tree lump it together with something adjacent? Is the quantity below what the supplier can economically run — in which case the answer is an MOQ conversation, not more emails? Is the spec still ambiguous enough that replying costs them a clarification round? Is it a holiday period, or the weeks around a major trade show when sales teams are on the floor?
And check the mechanics: a follow-up after five to seven business days, sent to a named person rather than a general inbox, recovers a surprising number of non-replies. Keep the follow-up short, restate the specification rather than asking whether they received the first message, and give a decision date so replying has a reason to happen this week. Persistent silence from suppliers who do make your part usually means the request is unattractive to quote, not that you are being snubbed.
