A 1968 GTO and a 1968 Chevelle share a great deal and share almost nothing anybody looks at. Frame, floor structure, suspension and steering geometry, brake architecture, glass openings, cowl and firewall pressings, many seals and much hardware crossed the divisions on GM's A-body platform, which is why reproduction parts for those systems are catalogued to several nameplates at once and were tooled decades ago. Grilles, taillamp bezels, emblems and script, dash and console bezels, wheel centre caps, division-specific interior trim, hood scoops and stripe kits did not cross, were built in a fraction of the volume, are often year-locked on top of division-locked, and in many cases were never re-tooled by anyone. That split decides, part by part, whether your job is to open a distributor account or commission a run — and for Buick and Oldsmobile it usually decides that the binding constraint is not a factory at all.
Do a 1968 GTO and a 1968 Chevelle use the same body parts?
Structurally yes, visually no. GM's A-body designation covered the corporation's intermediates, and from the early 1960s that meant Chevrolet Chevelle and Malibu, Pontiac Tempest, LeMans and GTO, Oldsmobile F-85 and Cutlass, and Buick Special and Skylark on one platform, as OnAllCylinders' guide to GM body codes lays out. The reproduction market reflects the sharing directly: Raybuck catalogs a floor pan under-support centre panel as fitting 1964-1969 Chevelle, Cutlass and GTO together, and floor pans catalogued to Chevelle or GTO across 1964-1967. One tool, several nameplates, cost spread across all of them.
The unshared half is everything a division used to tell you which car you were looking at. Each styled its own front and rear ends, instrument panels and interior trim, built only in that division's volume. So run two questions against every line item. Does this part cross divisions? And is it year-locked within the division? A yes to the first usually means somebody already tooled it and your job is to buy. A no to the first plus a yes to the second is the hardest quadrant in the classic parts business.
Which A-body systems cross divisions and which do not?
The second column does most of the work here. Read down it before reading anything else — the pattern is visible before you get to the detail.

How big is the volume gap between the siblings?
Big enough to explain everything above, and it compounds inside each division. Take 1970 as a snapshot. Musclecarclub's year-by-year GTO table puts 1970 GTO production at 40,149. Oldsmobile 442 production for 1970 is widely reported in enthusiast press at 19,330. The Parts Place publishes a Buick Gran Sport production data sheet giving a 1970 GS total of 20,096, broken down to 2,465 GS 455 Stage 1 hardtops, 232 Stage 1 convertibles, and 678 GSX hardtops of which 400 carried Stage 1. The 1970 Oldsmobile W-30 count is reported at roughly 3,100 across all three body styles.
None of those are factory records — they are enthusiast press, registries and a distributor's data sheet, and we are attributing rather than asserting them. Chevelle volume for the same year ran in the hundreds of thousands, but our sources disagree enough that we are not printing a figure. The argument survives without it: on one shared platform, in one model year, the best-selling divisional nameplate outsold its siblings roughly two to one, and the sub-models collectors most want land in the low thousands or the hundreds. A body-family tool sees all that volume at once. A GSX-specific or W-30-specific tool sees a few hundred cars, most already restored once.
What does a Taiwanese factory actually need to reproduce a divisional trim piece?
A good original. Not a drawing, not a photograph, not a set of measurements taken with a tape. For a taillamp bezel, an emblem, a console bezel or a grille, the factory's normal route is to scan or mould from a physical master and work back to a tool from there. Everything downstream inherits whatever that master is.
This is the constraint that actually kills Buick and Oldsmobile projects, and it deserves bluntness because it gets discovered late. If the best example you can find is pitted, warped, shrunken or — the common trap — already a mediocre reproduction, the run reproduces those flaws several hundred times over. No amount of factory capability fixes a bad master. On divisional trim for the lower-volume siblings, finding an excellent original is frequently harder and slower than finding a factory, and it is the first thing to solve rather than the last.
Two corollaries. Send the best master you can obtain even if you have to buy a whole parts car for it, and budget that as tooling cost rather than as a part. And insist the first article is measured against that master in your hands, not signed off from photographs — a bezel that photographs correctly and sits two millimetres proud is a return, not a delivery.
Where does the GM trademark question land?
On the importer of record, not the manufacturer. GM runs a trademark licensing programme covering restoration parts, and the model names themselves are marks: National Parts Depot, which describes itself as an authorised GM Restoration Parts licensee, lists Chevrolet, Pontiac, Chevelle, GTO, Tempest and LeMans among the trademarks owned by General Motors and used under licence. RESTOPARTS describes its own licence as certifying its products are authentic reproductions and the GM Restoration emblem as signalling factory-correct fit, finish and authenticity. Jim Osborn Reproductions, Year One, Legendary Auto Interiors and Trim Parts are among the other names in that programme.
A Taiwanese factory will make what you send it and will not check your licence. That is not a loophole, it is a description of where the liability sits. We will not help structure a project whose purpose is to reproduce a licensed mark without the licence, and if a badge or script is on your list the first call is GM's licensing route or a house that already holds one.
When is the answer not a new tool at all?
Frequently, and this is the honest limit that makes the rest of the article worth reading. For division-specific Buick GS and Oldsmobile 442 brightwork, bezels and interior trim, a new tool almost never pays back at any volume a single buyer can move. That is a volume fact rather than a Taiwan fact — it would be equally true commissioning the same tool in Ohio, and anyone claiming offshore tooling changes the arithmetic on a part with a few hundred buyers is selling you something.
The right answers in that quadrant are used parts, NOS while it lasts, re-plating and repairing the original, or a marque-specialist house that already carried the tooling cost. Specialists for Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Buick exist alongside the general GM distributors, and several have changed hands recently, so check who holds what before committing. Commissioning becomes sensible when the part crosses model years within a division, when it can be tooled alongside several other pieces to share the setup, when you sell it in the hundreds annually, or when several sellers share the run.
