Reproduction Wiring Harnesses: What to Buy in the US, What to Commission in Taiwan
If you need a concours-correct cloth-braided harness, buy it from one of the established US, UK or German houses and stop reading the sourcing pitch — including ours. A judged harness is not a wiring product, it is a documentation product wrapped around wire, and the things that make it correct cannot be bought: original blueprint libraries, purpose-built braiding machines, lacquered braided wire in the right colors, period terminals and connector bodies, and the tags, clips and sleeving a judge checks. No Taiwanese factory has any of that. Where the answer flips completely is the electrical items sitting around the harness — pigtails and sockets, cable sets, relays and flashers, circuit protection, terminals, grommets and loom, and complete non-concours harnesses for driver and restomod programs. That is a real Taiwan bench, and this article separates the two halves so you can act on both.
Why is a concours harness not really a wiring product?
Look at what the specialist houses say they own, and the category explains itself. Lectric Limited states that its "extensive library of obsolete original manufacturer's automotive blueprints insure that all our harnesses are built to the correct specifications," and that it invested in tooling to reproduce terminals once the originals went obsolete. YnZ's Yesterdays Parts says its harnesses are "covered with our own cloth braiding machines," using "original type lacquer-coated braided wire," with "all original style metal terminals ... soldered when applicable." These are the companies' own claims rather than independently audited facts — but they describe assets, not prices, and assets are what a competitor would have to replicate.
The detail level runs further down than most buyers expect. Narragansett Reproductions asks customers to send the original harness because "the schematics don't give all the necessary information that is required to build a harness from," and dates the US industry's switch from braided-and-lacquered to plastic-coated wire to the mid-1950s. In the UK, Bygone Spares braids pre-war harnesses "with chocolate cotton or a mix of black/chocolate rather than the conventional black cotton that many modern manufacturers now use." In Germany, Fa. Klaus Mueller braids rubber-coated wire with cotton and varnishes it with five layers of flame-resisting lacquer.
Chocolate braid instead of black. That is the level at which this category is judged, and it lives in one shop's pattern library rather than in any specification a factory could quote against. Commission a Taiwanese harness for a judged car and you will get a functional harness that fails on every detail your customer cares about.
So what should you actually commission in Taiwan?
Everything around the harness where tooling and engineering content dominate labor content. Taiwan's automotive-electrical bench was built on decades of motorcycle, scooter and aftermarket work and is deeper than the classic trade realizes: one Tainan wiring-harness and connector maker established in 1994 runs three factories and holds IATF 16949, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001; one flasher and relay manufacturer has been at it since 1971. Neither will ever braid you a correct pre-war harness. Both can stamp terminals, mold connector bodies, wind relays and build lamp pigtails all day. A useful sanity check is to look at what an established US harness house sells beyond harnesses — repair components, plug wire sets, battery cables and ground straps, lighting and fuse/flashers, switches, electrical devices. Every line except the harness itself is a reasonable Taiwan question.

What wire do you actually specify?
"Automotive wire" is not a specification, and the letters on the spool are not decoration. Modern US primary cable is built to SAE J1128, and the common cross-linked polyethylene types differ by insulation wall thickness: SXL standard wall, GXL thin wall, TXL extra-thin wall. Distributor references — we used Lapp Tannehill's, and could not read the standard itself, which sits behind SAE's paywall — put all three cross-linked types at a continuous rating of roughly minus 40 to 125 degrees Celsius, against roughly minus 40 to 85 for PVC-insulated GPT. Wall thickness is a real engineering choice: thinner saves weight and bundle diameter, thicker survives abrasion where a loom passes a bracket.
Now the tension nobody names. Period-correct wire for a pre-1960s car is not cross-linked polyethylene at all — it is rubber or PVC under lacquered cotton braid, and Narragansett's mid-1950s dating of the industry switch is the clean marker. The modern standard and the correct-appearance product are two different products, and you must decide which one you are selling before anybody quotes. A restomod harness built in thin-wall cross-linked wire with modern circuit protection is a better harness; on a judged car it is a defect. Write the type, the insulation temperature class and the stranding into the RFQ, per circuit.
Why do terminals decide whether the harness works?
Because the crimp is what fails, and the crimp is tooling. On US cars of the postwar decades the Packard 56 series is the terminal family most restoration work turns on — quarter-inch blades, male and female, feeding gauge pods, lamp sockets and heater controls, with a larger sibling series for higher-draw circuits such as headlamp sockets. Restoration-trade suppliers and forums are consistent on the practical point: an ordinary barrel-terminal crimper distorts these terminals so they will not seat in the connector body, and the correct tool is the matched Delphi/Packard-series crimper, which forms the core and insulation wings in separate motions. We name no tool numbers here — this article names no part numbers of any kind — but the tool exists and your assembler needs it.
In a sourcing conversation that becomes three lines. State the terminal series and gender per circuit rather than saying "spade connector." State the plating, because a tin-plated contact and a plated brass contact age differently in a car that sits nine months a year. And ask what crimp validation the factory performs — pull-off force to a stated value on a stated gauge, sampled at a stated frequency — because that is the difference between a harness that works and a harness that works until it is on a car.
Where does Taiwan lose, and why are we telling you?
Harness assembly is high labor content. Cutting, stripping, crimping, taping, looming and testing are hours, not tooling, and Taiwan is not a low-wage country. On pure labor-content products Taiwan loses to Vietnam, Mexico and mainland China, and a buyer whose only variable is assembly hours should not be talking to us about harnesses at all. That is a narrower claim than the one we could have made, and it costs us work to make it.
Taiwan's advantage is specifically on the molded, stamped, plated and electronically-assembled items around the harness, where tooling and engineering content dominate — and on mixed low-volume orders, because the same cluster that serves a fragmented aftermarket will run a few hundred pigtails and a few hundred flashers in one shipment, which a high-volume harness plant in a cheaper country will not. Two further limits of ours: we do not disclose supplier identities before a project is commissioned, so what you buy at the RFQ stage is verification work rather than a directory, and our structured catalog is automotive, which makes us steadily less useful the further you drift into general electronics contract manufacturing.
What is the sensible first move?
Split your electrical bill of materials into two lists before you talk to anybody. List one is anything judged on appearance — the harness itself, printed plug wire sets, anything cloth-braided — and it goes to the specialist houses at their price, which is fair for what they hold. List two is everything else: pigtails, sockets, relays, flashers, cable sets, grommets, loom, terminals. Aggregate list two across a season or a product family so tooling and freight overhead spread across enough pieces to matter.
