Early Bronco, Scout, CJ and FJ40: Four Platforms, Four Different Sourcing Problems
Reproduction-catalog depth on a classic 4x4 is set by who already paid for the tooling, not by how desirable the vehicle is — and that rule splits the four platforms buyers lump together into four unrelated commissioning problems. Early Bronco sheet metal is tooled in the United States down to complete reproduction bodies, so a new panel programme is a me-too unless it targets the restomod-spec layer. Jeep CJ faces an incumbent claiming almost 20,000 parts and MOPAR restoration licences, with steel tubs already pressed offshore. Land Cruiser 40-series panels have been tooled in mainland China since 2021, so that opportunity is not sheet metal at all — it is the hardware, seal, brightwork and lighting layer around a body someone else stamps. International Scout has the thinnest catalog and the worst tooling arithmetic of the four. On two of these platforms the answer is to buy from the existing distributor and tool nothing.
Why does catalog depth follow the tooling rather than the vehicle's popularity?
A die or a mold is a fixed cost recovered across every unit it ever produces — never across your one order. Whoever paid for it sits at a cost you cannot reach on a first run. So the useful question is not "is this vehicle hot?" but "is this part already tooled, by whom, and where does the tool sit?" Popularity works against you: the hotter the platform, the more likely somebody already spent the money.
Popularity does tell you one thing — the parts get consumed. Hagerty's market profile for trucks, SUVs and 4x4s names the FJ40 Land Cruiser, the Chevrolet C-10 and classic Broncos among the segment's leading vehicles, and reports Millennials are the group most likely to own a 4x4 older than 2005 (hagertyagent.com, resources/hagerty-insights/suv-truck-4x4). Driven vehicles eat hardware, seals, latches and lamps — a demand signal for consumables, not a licence to tool a panel.
Where does the tooling for each platform already sit?
This is a bench view assembled from what the incumbent vendors publish about themselves, not a quote and not a ranking of quality. Verify anything you plan to act on.

What is actually left to commission on an early Bronco?
Not sheet metal. Reproduction bodies here are a finished domestic product: Rust Belt OffRoad lists base shells with doors at $11,299-$11,799 and complete tubs at $13,999-$14,499, welded in-house from panels it says were reverse-engineered alongside a major automotive stamping plant (rustbeltoffroad.com). What is left is the layer where incumbents compete on breadth rather than specification — a named, better-than-original driver part: a seal compounded for a vehicle that lives outside, a latch with a stated effort limit, a lamp body that tolerates a modern bulb without warping. That is a spec a factory can quote. "Same as everyone else's, but cheaper" is not.
Can you compete with the Jeep CJ incumbent?
Mostly, no. Omix's own About page describes the company as the world's largest independent manufacturer of Jeep parts, with almost 20,000 parts in stock and authorisation to use MOPAR restoration and licensed-product logos (omix-ada.com/about; that page did not respond to our fetching tool, so confirm the wording before relying on it). Even the body tub is already offshore — retailers describe imported steel CJ tubs as coming from the Philippine plant that has pressed vintage Jeep bodies for decades. A licensed restoration part carries a badge you cannot manufacture your way into. What is left is the part an incumbent has no reason to make: an upgraded compound, an unusual sub-model, a finish combination nobody kits.
Why is FJ40 sheet metal the wrong project, and what is the right one?
This is the honest limit our competitors get backwards, so plainly: for Land Cruiser 40-series sheet metal, Taiwan is the wrong answer. Japanese Nostalgic Car reported in November 2022 that Jiangsu Juncheng Vehicle Industry Co., Ltd. began its FJ40 catalog in 2021, quoting a complete tub at $2,000 to $3,000 USD, doors around $250, and a full kit at $11,000 shipped (japanesenostalgiccar.com) — grille, doors, roof, rear quarters, wheel wells and rockers all included. No new programme beats an amortised tool on a commodity panel, and we will not pretend otherwise to win a project.
Small-batch panel work exists outside China at very different price points — one wholesale-enabled seller lists 40-series steel body assemblies from roughly $998 to $12,500, without stating a country of manufacture anywhere. Treat unstated origin as unknown until somebody puts it in writing.
The real opportunity is the layer around the body: door and top hardware, latches, strikers and hinges, window channels and extruded seals, brightwork, lamp bodies and bezels, kitted fasteners. Die-cast, stamped, extruded, moulded and plated parts in the hundreds — Taiwan's bench, and exactly what a rebuilt tub still needs.
What is Toyota's own reissue programme doing to the 40-series opportunity?
Something most buyers have not priced in. Toyota's GR Heritage Parts programme covers the Land Cruiser 40; the parts list on its site carried a 1 August 2026 revision date with 93 line items, plus a short substitute-parts list, when we checked, and Toyota states these are parts "supplied as Toyota Genuine Parts that have been verified to fit the Land Cruiser 40" (toyotagazooracing.com/gr/heritage/landcruiser40/). Three carry published US order windows between September and November 2026, shipping November 2026 to January 2027: a combination lamp bracket, a speedometer cable and a hood silencer.
Read the list, not the headline. It includes a windshield weatherstrip, front door window regulators, rear combination lamp assemblies and covers, a grille ornament, laminated windshield glass, a room lamp and switch knobs — several squarely inside the categories this article otherwise recommends. Tooling against Toyota's own reissue loses money to a genuine part with a dealer counter behind it. Not a blanket veto: two entries were already flagged sold out, a reissue is not permanent, and the coverage is narrow next to a full restoration. But read the parts list and the substitute list before spending tooling money, and re-read them, because the list is revised.
Why would we turn down an International Scout tooling project?
Because we would be taking your US$99 for a project that cannot pay you back. Scout is the platform buyers ask about most and the one where offshore tooling amortises worst: the specialists who serve it — Super Scout Specialists, IH Parts America, Anything Scout and Classic 2 Current Fabrication among them — run on a blend of NOS, used, rebuilt and small-batch fabricated steel precisely because the installed base does not support production tooling. A US fabricator, a 3D-scanned short run or a used-parts specialist will beat any import programme on almost every Scout-specific item. The exception is a part you can tool once and sell across several platforms, and that list is short.
Move carefully on the name, too. Scout Motors is now an independent subsidiary of Volkswagen Group, established in May 2022 and building a plant in Blythewood, South Carolina for the forthcoming Traveler and Terra (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scout_Motors); reporting on its 2023 USPTO filings describes applications covering historic model names including Scout II and Super Scout. Printing a model name on a box is a question for your attorney first.
So what should you commission, and what should you just buy?
Commission where the tooling does not exist, the part is specification-driven rather than appearance-judged, and you re-order it season after season: 40-series hardware, seals, brightwork and lighting; restomod-spec upgrades on Bronco and CJ; fastener kits across any of the four. Buy from the incumbent for early Bronco sheet metal, commodity CJ parts, 40-series panels and tubs, and almost anything Scout-specific.
