Taiwan vs. China for Aftermarket Auto Parts: The 2026 Landed-Cost Math
This isn't a "Taiwan good, China bad" piece. It's the math a buyer should actually run before moving a program, with the current tariff inputs plugged in and the parts of the comparison that tariffs don't capture called out honestly. Landed cost, not unit price, is the number that matters — and in 2026 the gap between those two numbers has widened enough to change decisions that looked settled a year ago.
Start with the tariff spread — it's the biggest single input
Start by discarding the old framing. The IEEPA "reciprocal" tariffs were struck down — the Supreme Court held in Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump that IEEPA did not authorize them, and Executive Order 14389 of February 20, 2026 ended them. The 10% Section 122 surcharge that briefly replaced them expired July 24, 2026. Neither is part of your landed cost today.
For Taiwan-origin auto parts, two layers matter. First, Section 232: under a January 2026 US–Taiwan memorandum of understanding, implemented at 91 FR 31818 and retroactive to May 1, 2026, Section 232 duties on Taiwan-origin passenger-vehicle and light-truck parts are capped so the total reaches 15% — and where the Column 1 rate is already 15% or higher, no additional Section 232 duty applies. Second, Section 301: a forced-labor tariff action effective July 24, 2026 sets Taiwan at 10% net of MFN, but it expressly does not apply to parts entered under the Section 232 auto-parts headings.
The practical result is a fork. A Taiwan-origin part that sits on the Section 232 auto-parts list lands at 15% all-in. A Taiwan-origin part that does not lands at 10% all-in (its Column 1 rate plus enough Section 301 duty to reach 10%). Both figures are totals, not additions to a base rate. Which fork your part takes depends on its HTS classification — ask your customs broker to confirm before you build a model on either number.
China-origin parts are hit by the same forced-labor action at 12.5%, and that stacks on top of the pre-existing Section 301 List duties, which vary by classification and are frequently the largest single layer. The direction of the spread still favors Taiwan on comparable aftermarket parts; the magnitude is genuinely product-specific, so the honest move is to price your own classification rather than trust a headline number. All rates here are as of August 2026 and have moved repeatedly — verify current rates with your customs broker.
Run the actual math
Here's a worked, illustrative example — generic figures, not a real quote — for a mid-complexity part like a tail-lamp assembly or an outer tie-rod end. Taiwan-origin unit prices often run higher on paper than China-origin unit prices for the same spec, reflecting labor cost and typically smaller production runs. The question is what happens after duty.
The Taiwan column below uses the two confirmed all-in outcomes described above. The China column is deliberately left as a variable, because China's rate is Column 1 plus a product-specific Section 301 List duty plus the 12.5% forced-labor duty — and the List component differs enough between classifications that any single figure would mislead. - To see how the ranking flips: if your China classification carries a 25% Section 301 List duty on top of a 2.5% Column 1 rate, the 12.5% forced-labor duty takes it to 40% — $3.20 on an $8.00 part, landing at $11.20 against Taiwan's $10.12–$10.58. That is an assumption for illustration, not a rate we are asserting for your part.
- Ocean freight from either origin to a US West Coast port is usually close enough in cost per unit that it doesn't change the ranking — but always confirm your actual lane and Incoterm rather than assuming.
- The dollar gap narrows for simple, low-value commodity parts where the duty amount is small either way, and widens as unit value rises.
- Duty is not the only line item that moved: the $800 de minimis exemption has been suspended for all modes since June 24, 2026 and is repealed by statute effective July 1, 2027, so low-value shipments now require formal or informal entry.
Where China still wins
It would be dishonest to stop at the tariff table. China's manufacturing base is larger and, for the highest-volume commodity parts, often has a deeper supplier bench — more factories competing for the same part number tends to compress unit price further than Taiwan's smaller, more specialized cluster can match on raw FOB price alone. For an extremely high-volume, low-complexity part where duty makes up a small share of landed cost, a China quote can still land cheaper even after the current tariff gap.
China also frequently has faster tooling turnaround for a brand-new model year on very high-demand vehicles, simply because more shops are racing to tool it first.
Non-tariff factors that change the math
Several factors don't show up in a landed-cost spreadsheet but belong in the decision anyway.
- MOQ flexibility — Taiwan's aftermarket cluster grew up serving fragmented export demand, so pilot-scale and mixed-container orders are normal business rather than a favor
- Certification depth — IATF 16949, PPAP and APQP discipline are closer to table stakes across Taiwan's automotive-parts cluster, which matters if you sell into liability-sensitive markets
- Communication and documentation — English-language drawings, NDAs and first-article inspection reports are routine practice for export-hardened Taiwanese suppliers
- Supply continuity — a second, verified source outside your primary country of origin has value that a pure cost comparison doesn't capture, especially given how quickly tariff policy has moved in the last two years
How to build your own spreadsheet
Treat the figures above as a starting structure, not an answer. To get a number you can act on:
- Get real FOB quotes from both origins for the exact same specification — same material, same tolerance, same finish
- Get freight quotes for your actual lane and Incoterm rather than assuming they're equal
- Apply the correct HTS classification and current duty rate for your specific product — rates vary by classification and by policy, and the figures in this article are 2026 general reference points, not a substitute for checking your product's current rate
- Add customs brokerage, insurance and any warehousing costs on both sides
- Compare landed cost per unit, not FOB price per unit — that's the only number that actually decides the winner
