If you buy aftermarket collision, lighting, or chassis parts for the North American or European market, Taiwan has probably touched your supply chain longer than you realized — even when the paperwork said otherwise. Two things changed in 2026 that make it worth sourcing directly rather than through a layer of intermediaries: a tariff structure that now clearly favors Taiwan-origin parts over China-origin equivalents, and a verification process mature enough that you can vet a factory before you ever place an order. This guide walks through both, plus the RFQ habits that separate buyers who get a usable shortlist from buyers who get a folder of vague replies.
Why Taiwan's aftermarket cluster exists
Taiwan became a center of gravity for aftermarket collision parts the unglamorous way: decades of reverse-engineering body panels, lamps, mirrors and cooling components to OE fit, then building the certification track record — CAPA, NSF, IATF 16949 — that lets those parts clear insurance-industry and OEM scrutiny in the US and EU. That history means deep tooling libraries for high-volume models, fast coverage of new model years, and a supplier base that already speaks the language of PPAP, first-article inspection and English-language technical drawings.
It also means the industry isn't limited to collision parts. The same manufacturing base feeds OEM and tier-one programs for forged and machined chassis components, rubber and sealing parts, and — increasingly — EV battery, charging and powertrain hardware, as electronics-heavy supply chains lean on Taiwan's existing precision-manufacturing base.
The tariff math, as of August 2026
First, clear away something you may still be carrying: the IEEPA "reciprocal" tariffs are gone. The Supreme Court held in Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump that the President lacked IEEPA authority to impose them, and Executive Order 14389 of February 20, 2026 ended those duties. A temporary 10% Section 122 balance-of-payments surcharge that ran in their place expired on July 24, 2026 and was never additive to Section 232 duties anyway. There is no "reciprocal tariff" on Taiwan goods today.
What actually governs Taiwan-origin auto parts is a Section 232 cap. Under a January 2026 US–Taiwan memorandum of understanding, implemented at 91 FR 31818 and retroactive to May 1, 2026, Section 232 duties on Taiwan-origin passenger-vehicle and light-truck parts are limited so that the total comes to 15% — if the part's Column 1 rate is already 15% or more, no additional Section 232 duty applies at all. (Note that the separate February 2026 Agreement on Reciprocal Trade has been signed but had not entered into force as of this writing.)
The catch most buyers miss: the 15% cap only reaches parts that are actually on the Section 232 auto-parts list. A Taiwan-origin part that is not on that list gets no Section 232 duty — but it does pick up the Section 301 forced-labor duty that began July 24, 2026, set for Taiwan at 10% net of MFN. So a typical aftermarket part lands at either 15% or 10% all-in depending on its classification, plus merchandise processing and harbor fees. Which one applies to your part is a question for your customs broker, not for a blog post.
China-origin parts face the same Section 301 forced-labor action at 12.5%, stacked on top of the pre-existing Section 301 List duties that vary by classification — so the gap still favors Taiwan on comparable parts, but the size of it is product-specific. Step by step: how to source a part
The process that works is unglamorous and sequential. Skipping steps to save a week almost always costs more time later.
- Define the part in plain language first — vehicle make, model, generation, year range and position (for example, "front bumper cover, 2021–2023 Honda CR-V, base trim"). You don't need an OE or part number to start a search; in fact, most serious factories expect a vehicle/position description before any reference numbers change hands.
- Identify candidate manufacturers, not trading companies. A factory with its own tooling for the category behaves differently in negotiation than a broker forwarding your RFQ to someone else — ask directly who owns the tooling.
- Verify before you talk price. Confirm certifications (CAPA, NSF, IATF 16949 or equivalent) against the certifying body's own public database rather than taking a claim at face value, and ask for evidence of export experience to your specific market.
- Send a structured RFQ, not a one-line "please quote" email. Completeness beats speed — a vague request produces a vague, unusable reply.
- Compare normalized quotes: same Incoterm, same packaging assumption, same MOQ. A lower unit price on different terms is not actually a lower price.
- Pilot before you commit to volume. A small sample run you can physically inspect is cheap insurance against a production-scale mistake.
What a good RFQ contains
The single biggest lever a buyer controls is RFQ completeness. A request with the following elements gets faster, more accurate replies — and filters out factories that can't actually do the work, before you've spent a week on email.
- A precise vehicle and fitment descriptor, including the year range covered and any known mid-cycle changes
- Target quantity and your flexibility on MOQ — pilot volumes and production volumes are different conversations
- Any known tolerance, material or finish specification, even approximate
- Required certifications and whether test reports are needed with the quote
- Target unit price (if you have a benchmark) and the Incoterm you're quoting against
- Timeline for samples and, separately, for production
- Packaging and labeling requirements for your market
A note on reference numbers
Many experienced buyers deliberately hold back OE and internal cross-reference numbers until a quote is in hand. Those numbers are easily searchable and, shared too early, can let either side route around the relationship being built. It's entirely reasonable — and often faster — to describe a part by vehicle, position and generic spec first, and exchange exact reference numbers once you're ready to move to sampling. The same handful of mistakes account for most bad outcomes we see buyers walk into.
- Assuming the lowest quoted unit price is the lowest landed cost — it rarely is once duty, freight and MOQ are factored in
- Skipping certification verification and discovering the gap only when a customer or insurer asks for documentation
- Treating a trading company's quote as a factory's quote, without asking who owns the tooling
- Not asking about tooling investment or lead time for a model your target factory doesn't already produce
- Committing to full production volume before running a physical sample
