Fuel Tanks, Senders and Lines for Classics: What to Commission in Taiwan and What to Buy at Home

The classic fuel system does not divide into "Taiwan good" and "Taiwan bad." It divides on three specifications that almost never appear on a drawing: freight density, coating chemistry, and the sender's resistance sweep. The stamped tank is the single worst item in the system to import — you pay ocean freight on cube rather than weight, an empty tank dents whenever the packing is wrong, and the United States already has both a reproduction-tank trade and a tank re-lining trade competing for the job. Almost everything bolted to that tank is the opposite: senders, lock rings and seals, filler necks, straps, hard lines, fittings and pickup screens are dense, cheap to ship, chronically unreproduced for oddball platforms, and worth commissioning — provided you write the coating and the ohm sweep into the RFQ yourself, because no factory will volunteer either one.

Why is a complete stamped tank the worst item in this system to import?

Because you are paying to ship air, and because the part has no structure until it is installed. Ocean freight is charged on the greater of weight or measurement, so a thin steel skin around a large empty volume is priced as dense cargo — a pallet of tanks is a pallet of shaped air. The same geometry makes it fragile: a strap tightened over an unsupported panel leaves a dent visible for the life of the car. Reproduction-tank fitment and dent complaints are a persistent thread in owner communities across marques; treat that as a live packaging risk, not a measured defect rate.

The domestic alternative is also unusually strong, which is the part a sourcing service is not supposed to say. US shops running the Renu-type process sandblast the tank inside and out, repair the damage, then chemically bond a coating to both surfaces; providers advertise a limited lifetime warranty on passenger-car and light-truck tanks (gastankrenu.com; Moyer Fuel Tank Renu at gas-tank.com). A re-lined original keeps its own stampings, seam lines, baffles and sender flange — the entire point of a judged car — and never gets on a boat.

There is a finish trap on top of the freight trap. The AACA 2026 Official Judging Guidelines state that "Plating must be of the authentic type for the vehicle being judged," with a deduction of one point per item carrying non-authentic plating, to a maximum of ten. A tank finished in bright modern zinc reads wrong to anyone expecting the dull grey of terne, and a factory will quote the finish its line already runs unless you say otherwise.

Which fuel-system parts are actually worth a Taiwan programme?

Sort by freight density first and tooling cost second. The parts that reward a commissioned run are dense, small, repeat-purchase items with modest tooling — the profile Taiwan's stamping, turning, plating and rubber benches were built around. The parts that punish it are large, hollow, fragile, or already served by an established domestic trade.

What does terne coating mean, and why must the buyer specify it?

Terne is a lead-tin alloy hot-dipped onto sheet steel, and it has its own ASTM specification — A308/A308M, "Standard Specification for Steel Sheet, Terne (Lead-Tin Alloy) Coated by the Hot-Dip Process." Why it ended up under so many mid-century cars is in that standard's scope: terne suits applications wanting corrosion resistance plus solderability, and performs particularly well where resistance to gasoline is needed. It also lubricates the die when drawing a deep tank half. Ni-terne is the same coating over an electrodeposited nickel flash laid on the cold-rolled sheet first; that underlayer buys the extra corrosion resistance, and it is the finish reproduction houses advertise on tanks for 1950s through 1970s American cars.

Two consequences, both belonging in the RFQ rather than a conversation after samples land. Visually, terne is dull grey — the appearance a fussy customer expects — and bright zinc is a scoreable difference under the plating rule above. Chemically, terne is lead-bearing, so if you commission it you own the question of whether that is acceptable in your market and to your own EHS position. Expect quiet substitution to zinc or aluminized steel unless the purchase order names the coating, and require a first article you can hold next to an original.

Why does a dimensionally perfect sender still come back as a return?

Because a sending unit is an electrical part matched to the gauge, not a mechanical part matched to the tank. A unit that drops in perfectly, seals perfectly and reads wrong is a returned part. Tanks Inc puts the rule plainly: "The resistance of your fuel sender should match that of your gauge," and — the failure everyone meets eventually — "a 73-10 ohm fuel sender would read backwards on a 0-90 ohm fuel gauge." Sweep direction matters as much as the endpoints, and so does which side of the rheostat the float arm leaves from; the same guidance notes the arm on the wrong side also reverses the reading.

The ranges below are what sender and gauge manufacturers publish as fitment guidance — Tanks Inc and the Speedhut gauge knowledge base agree on them. Treat them as vendor fitment tables, not original-equipment documentation, and measure the gauge actually in the car before committing a run to a sweep:

  • GM, pre-1965: roughly 0 ohms empty to 30 ohms full
  • GM, mid-1960s through the late 1990s: roughly 0 ohms empty to 90 ohms full
  • Ford before 1987, and most Chrysler and AMC before the mid-1980s: roughly 73 ohms empty to 10 ohms full — an inverted sweep
  • Ford from 1987: roughly 16 ohms empty to 158 ohms full
  • Common aftermarket and marine gauges: 240 ohms empty to 33 ohms full

Which fuel hose is correct, and which one survives E10?

Frequently not the same hose, and that is a decision your brand makes in writing rather than one the factory makes for you. Ethanol is the reason. It is hygroscopic — Bell Performance's classic-car guidance calls that "a fancy way of saying it easily absorbs water" — and water in the tank leads to contamination and phase separation, leaving a corrosive layer at the bottom. The same source notes ethanol "is highly corrosive" around metal and "is also a solvent and it will disintegrate fiberglass, plastic, and rubber." We will not put a water-percentage threshold on phase separation here; the figures in circulation are not traceable to a source we could verify, and this audience notices. The SAE J30 grade is what decides the outcome, and the grades are genuinely different products — the table follows the Summit Racing buyer's guide (OnAllCylinders) for grade behaviour and Continental's published data for the 30R9 numbers.

So what does a reproduction brand actually put on the listing?

Pick one and say so. For a judged-car audience, sell the correct-looking low-pressure hose and state on the listing that it is period-appearance hose the customer should assess against the fuel they actually run. For drivers, sell the fluoroelastomer-lined grade and state that it will not look original. What destroys a reproduction brand is selling one and implying the other. Same discipline on hard lines: the AACA guidelines accept "Unpolished stainless steel brake and fuel lines" in place of steel, so a stainless set is defensible on a judged car — a polished one is a different decision.

One paragraph on regulation, because buyers ask. No Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard reaches a replacement fuel tank as an item of equipment: FMVSS 301 at 49 CFR 571.301 specifies "requirements for the integrity of motor vehicle fuel systems," and its application section reaches passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks, buses and school buses — vehicles, not aftermarket tanks. That is not the same as no obligation. NHTSA has stated repeatedly in published interpretations that the safety-defect and remedy provisions at 49 U.S.C. 30118 through 30121 reach motor vehicle equipment including aftermarket items to which no standard applies, and that a manufacturer finding a safety-related defect must notify purchasers and remedy it.
