Sourcing MG, Triumph and Austin-Healey Parts from Taiwan: What Changes When You Specify the Part Yourself
If you sell MG, Triumph or Austin-Healey parts in the United States, the Taiwan question is not open — it was settled years ago, without you in the room. A British-marque restoration shop in Houston, the Sport and Classic Car Company, states it flatly on its own site: "Most parts for MG and Triumph cars are made in Taiwan or China these days," and "the quality is frequently abysmal." Read that as a buyer rather than as an owner and it says something uncomfortable. Whatever brand is printed on the box, you are probably already reselling an Asian-made part — and nobody on your side of the transaction chose the rubber compound, the plating stack, or the reference part the tool was cut from. The only decision genuinely still in front of you is whether to keep inheriting someone else's specification or write your own. This is what changes when you do, and where the honest answer is that you shouldn't bother.
Is the Taiwan question actually still open for British marques?
No, and pretending otherwise is the reason the quality complaint never gets solved. The line quoted above appears on a working shop's site as an explanation of its own labour rates to customers — it is one specialist's trade opinion, not a survey of factories or a measurement of parts, and it deserves to be read that way. But the same page makes a structural point that is harder to argue with: "Many established and respected manufacturing companies have moved production of quality parts out of England and the USA to third world countries," and several long-familiar brand names now belong to companies that make their parts somewhere else entirely, or no longer exist as manufacturers at all.
That is the claim worth acting on. In this trade a familiar brand on a box is a marketing asset attached to an unknown supply chain, not evidence of where or how the part was made. Whether a given reproduction part is abysmal is a question about that part. Whether you can answer where it came from is a question about your business — and it is the one your customer will eventually ask, usually in public, usually on a forum, usually after they have already found the answer themselves.
What does your catalog supplier actually know about the part it sells you?
Often a great deal — and it is under no obligation to tell you any of it. Small reproduction brands and marque specialists frequently build a product line by buying from the US catalog tier and relabelling, which works right up until the moment you need to change something about the part. You cannot specify a compound you did not choose, and you cannot promise a customer an improvement you have no mechanism to make.
That tier also has fewer independent players in it than it used to. Moss Motors acquired Victoria British on 20 November 2020 — Moss based in Goleta, California, Victoria British founded in 1981 in Lenexa, Kansas — and Moss describes itself as "a multi-national warehouse distributor, manufacturer and retailer of performance, restoration and replacement parts for vintage British and specialty market vehicles." That is a perfectly normal and long-established structure, and it is also exactly the structure that leaves a small brand negotiating with an organisation that commissions the part, stocks the part and sells the part. None of that is a criticism of anyone's business. It is a description of the market a small brand is standing in, and it explains why so many of them conclude they have no lever on quality: they genuinely don't, because they never held the specification.
What does specifying the part yourself actually change?
Specification control is narrower than the phrase suggests. It gives you authority over materials, finish, reference geometry and inspection — and no authority at all over the economics of scale, freight, or the fact that a reproduction is a reproduction. The fourth column below is the one most buyers skip, and it is the one that keeps the exercise honest.

What should you never ask a Taiwanese factory to make for these cars?
Body shells and major structural panels, first and without hedging. British Motor Heritage says on its own site that it "assembles 32 derivatives of body shells" with a "total production volume of over 7,000", using "original press tools and assembly jigs", covering the MGB, MGR V8, MG Midget, Austin-Healey Sprite, Triumph TR6, original Mini and Mini Clubman. A reverse-engineered panel copies a car; a Heritage shell comes off the tooling the car was built on. No sourcing argument survives contact with that distinction, and no first-article inspection closes it. BMH publishes its own approved-specialist list, split into UK and international specialists — that list, not a factory quote, is where a shell conversation should start.
Second, engine internals. The segment's suspicion of cheap imported bearings, pistons and valve gear is not snobbery, and it is not really about country of origin either: it is about the fact that metallurgy, heat treatment and dimensional tolerance in an assembly are exactly the properties a buyer cannot check on arrival, in a component whose failure destroys the thing around it. Marque forums argue about specific brands constantly; those arguments are opinion rather than measurement and we are not going to repeat them. The direction is right, though. For a driver-grade rebuild, a known-brand part or genuine old stock beats a cheaper unknown, and that stays true no matter who is quoting.
How do you run a first article so the argument ends before your customer starts it?
The point of a first article in this trade is not to confirm the part works. It is to create a written record of what correct means, so that lot three is still the part you approved.
- Nominate the reference part in writing, and say what it is — a genuine original, a known-good used part off a specific car, or another reproduction. A tool cut from a copy drifts further from correct with every generation, and this is the single question that most often goes unasked
- Send a physical reference to the factory rather than photographs and dimensions, and get it back with the sample so you can put them side by side
- Separate shape from finish when you inspect: geometry against the reference car, then plating tone and thickness, rubber durometer, grain and gloss as independent checks
- Fix the specification in a document both sides sign — compound, plating stack, colour and grain reference, packaging — and make it the thing production is inspected against, not the sample photograph
- Agree what a rejected lot looks like and who pays for it before the first production order, not after it
When is commissioning a run simply the wrong answer?
More often than a sourcing service has any commercial incentive to admit, so here it is plainly.
- If your annual volume on a part is a few dozen pieces, there is no tooling case. A catalog house has already spread the same tool cost across the whole market and will beat your landed cost per unit — commissioning a run is the wrong answer and buying it is simply right
- If you do not yet have a genuine reference part, you are not ready to specify anything. Buy from a distributor with a return policy while you build a reference library; that library is the actual asset
- If the part is a shell, a major structural panel, or an engine internal, see the section above — the answer does not change with volume

Where this leaves a British marque buyer
The quality complaint in this segment is real, and the reason it persists is structural rather than geographic: the trade outsourced the specification along with the manufacturing, and then blamed the manufacturing. Rubber, brightwork, interior trim and lighting are families where writing your own specification changes the part you receive. Shells, structural panels and engine internals are families where it does not, and where the correct move is British Motor Heritage or a known brand.
