Taiwan is the wrong sourcing answer more often than a Taiwan sourcing service would like to admit: when you're buying high-volume commodity parts where price is the only spec that matters, when a part is mostly manual labor, when you need nearshore lead times, or when the category simply isn't one Taiwan's cluster is deep in. High-volume commodity parts where price is the whole spec
For a simple, high-volume part with no certification requirement and no fitment sensitivity — generic clamps, basic trim clips, unbranded accessories — China's much larger supplier bench routinely compresses FOB prices below what Taiwan's smaller cluster can match, and on a low-value part the dollar amount of duty is small enough that even the current tariff spread doesn't flip the ranking. India plays the same role for iron castings like rotors and drums. If your buying decision genuinely reduces to lowest unit price at massive volume, Taiwan will usually quote higher and lose — and a factory there will often tell you so directly.
Labor-intensive parts and assemblies
Taiwan's labor costs are the highest among the common Asian sourcing origins, which makes it a poor fit for parts whose cost is mostly hands: wiring harnesses, upholstery and stitched interior trim, hand-finished assemblies. That work migrated years ago to Vietnam and, for the North American market, to Mexico — and no amount of tooling depth changes the arithmetic. Taiwan competes on precision per unit, not on hours per unit.
When lead time matters more than landed cost
Trans-Pacific ocean freight means weeks on the water before a container from any Asian origin reaches a US warehouse. If your business depends on rapid replenishment — a fast-moving e-commerce catalog you restock in small waves, or a fleet operation that can't carry deep inventory — a nearshore source in Mexico, or a domestic distributor's stock, can beat a cheaper Asian landed cost simply by turning inventory faster. European buyers face the same trade with Turkey and Eastern European suppliers. Taiwan's advantage is cost and quality at container cadence, not speed to your dock.
Categories where Taiwan's bench is thin
Taiwan's aftermarket cluster is deep, but it is not deep everywhere. In some categories capable shops exist, yet the bench is too thin to create the competitive tension that gets a buyer sharp pricing and real choice:
- Tires — a global industry dominated by dedicated producers elsewhere; Taiwan is not where you shop a tire program
- Automotive glass at volume, where a handful of very large global producers set the economics
- Commodity lead-acid batteries, a freight-heavy category that clusters near its end markets
- Deep interior soft trim — seats, carpets, headliners — which follows labor cost, not tooling depth
- Heavy iron castings at commodity prices, where India and China's foundry scale wins

How to test it for your part
You don't have to take this article's word for any of it — the test is cheap. Get real quotes for the same specification from Taiwan and from the origin the table suggests, normalize them to the same Incoterm and MOQ, apply each origin's current duty rate, and compare landed cost per unit alongside the non-price factors that matter to your program: certification evidence, MOQ flexibility, and communication quality during the quoting process itself. If Taiwan loses that comparison for your part, believe the comparison. A factory that quotes high on a commodity part isn't failing you — it's telling you what its cluster is actually built for.
