Classic American pickups — the Chevrolet C10 and its GMC siblings, the Ford F-100, and their peers from the 1960s and early 1970s — are an easier sourcing problem than classic cars in some ways and a harder one in others. Easier because these trucks survived in usable numbers and their bodies are simple: flatter panels with less compound curvature, bolt-on front sheet metal, and a bed separate from the cab, so the tooled catalog runs deeper per dollar spent. Harder because a truck is really three products bolted together, each with its own hardware, and because part of the market wants an original-looking truck while the rest wants one that stops and steers like a modern vehicle. Taiwan's contribution is concentrated in seals and weatherstrip, brightwork, lighting, cab and bed hardware, small pressed pieces and fastener kits — the big pressed panels and anything structural belong somewhere else.
How is sourcing for a classic pickup different from sourcing for a classic car?
Three structural differences drive almost everything. First, body-on-frame construction with bolt-on fenders, a bolt-on hood and a separate bed means panels can be replaced individually without cutting the truck apart, so the reproduction catalog can be assembled panel by panel, whereas a car of the same era mostly needs welded repair sections. Second, truck panels are flatter and less compound-curved, which makes tooling cheaper to cut and the fit closer out of the box. Third, these trucks were built as tools and kept working, so a large share survived in rough-but-usable condition instead of being scrapped. Hagerty's market profile for trucks, SUVs and 4x4s counts more than 3.4 million trucks and SUVs inside a US collector-vehicle population of roughly 43 million, and reports its off-road 4x4 segment grew nearly 20 percent from 2021 to 2022, behind only supercars and exotics.
The parts mix differs too, in ways that catch car-side buyers out. A truck restoration consumes bed wood and bed strips, tailgate hardware, running boards, cab mounts, inner and outer bed hardware, and a considerably longer list of seals than a car of the same vintage — categories a car restoration simply does not have.
What does Taiwan actually make for the classic-truck segment?
The pattern follows the tooling economics rather than the nameplate: extrusion, plating, die-casting, injection molding and cold-formed fasteners are where the bench is deep, and heavy pressing is where it is not.

Restomod or original — which build is your customer buying?
The restomod share of this segment is large and it is not a fringe taste: SEMA's ARMO trend reporting describes younger owners leaning toward restomod builds rather than concours-original ones, with the 1960s to early 1970s still the most popular era. That split changes the part, not just the marketing around it.
A restomod customer wants modern seal compounds, hardware that works better than the original, lamp bodies that tolerate modern bulbs, and a finish that survives being driven — original appearance is optional and sometimes actively unwanted. An originality customer wants the right grain, the right sheen, the right fastener head, and will treat every one of those improvements as a defect. If you are a parts brand, that usually means two SKUs rather than one compromise part, and it is far cheaper to decide that at tooling time than after the first season of returns.
For a Taiwan program specifically, the restomod SKU is generally the easier and more profitable one to commission, because it is spec-driven: acceptance can be written as measurements and material properties. An originality-correct SKU needs a physical reference part and a much more expensive first-article conversation, because you are buying a judgment about appearance rather than a number.
What has to be in a classic-truck spec that is not in a car spec?
Truck configuration variables do more damage than year alone. Work through this list before anyone quotes.
- Cab and bed configuration named alongside the year: short bed against long bed, fleetside or styleside against stepside or flareside, and big-window against small-window cabs — these change parts that share a description
- Bed floor as a system: wood species, thickness and finish, plus bed strip profile, length and hole pattern, since strips and wood are fitted together and mismatch is the most common complaint in the category
- Whether you need glass itself or only the seals, channels and setting hardware — the seals and hardware are a normal sourcing item and the glass usually is not
- Tailgate hardware quoted as a complete assembly — latches, handles, cables or chains, hinges — because mixing years inside one assembly is a frequent field failure
- Seal cross-sections and durometer rather than descriptions, since "door seal" covers a dozen incompatible profiles on these platforms
- Fastener finish and head marking if the truck will ever be judged; plain zinc where black phosphate belongs is visible from across a show field
- An explicit acknowledgement of the body's condition — a bolt-on fender going onto a cab that has been off the frame, re-shimmed or repaired will still need alignment work no matter who made the part
Where should a classic-truck buyer not look to Taiwan?
The honest exclusions matter more in this segment than in most, because the tempting parts are exactly the wrong ones.
- Bedsides, cab corners, floor pans, roof skins and complete beds — heavy presses, large dies and a freight cube that ruins the landed math; buy these from whoever already tools them
- Automotive glass, which is regulated, heavy and fragile enough that marking requirements and breakage risk make it a specialist purchase
- Upholstery, headliners, carpet sets and wood-grain work, which follow labor cost and pattern libraries rather than tooling depth
- Engineered systems sold as kits — disc brake conversions, steering and suspension packages — where you are buying validation and someone standing behind the engineering as much as the parts
- Anything whose correctness is a date code or foundry mark, which no factory can manufacture into existence
- Very small quantities: below a few hundred pieces the tooling and freight overhead usually swallows the unit saving, so aggregate across a season, a product family or a group of retailers first
What is the sensible first move?
Pick the two or three parts you re-order most often, that nobody currently tools well, and that you can specify without a judgment call — seals, hardware, brightwork and fastener kits are usually where that lands for a truck program. Prove the relationship on those before you spend tooling money on anything appearance-critical, and keep a physical reference part for every one of them.
